Thank you all for coming on Friday. The kids did an amazing job and I was very proud of all their hard work. Due to days out of school and a few scheduling conflicts, the children did not get as much practice as previous years. Just goes to show the talent we have in third grade. Thank you for your help with costumes and those moms and dads that worked on the set and the reception after the show. Every year I am in awe at what the kids decide to do for their state cake.
We have much to catch up on from last week and accomplish new this week. The children will have homework tonight and tomorrow night that will take some focus and perhaps some extra time. Tonight the children will have some George Washington's Socks questions(due Wednesday), spelling abc order and a writing assessment activity. We will have a spelling test on Friday along with the reading comprehension activity, Star Trek. Again, please make sure that you sign once you have heard your child read the story.
Friday is Field Day. The children are coming home with a letter that explains the details of the morning. Third grade goes to the field at 10:00-11:30. We will hopefully be able to get some quality work accomplished in the morning.
Spelling words not only celebrate our reading, but also the Science Explorations we will be doing this week. Today, we had many parents come in and share three incredible aspects of science. You will want to ask your child what they learned and made. The children rotated from Making Paper to How to Save the Coral Reefs to How to Purify Water. I was very impressed with the organization of the event and the children learned so much and enjoyed the hands-on aspect. Our class has science visitors tomorrow and again on Wednesday.
Our Spelling words this week are as follows: black, blacken, bright, brighten, chose, chosen, damp, dampen, dark, darken, fast, fasten, hard, harden length, lengthen, moist, moisten, soft, soften, spoke, spoken, straight, straighten, thick, thicken, tight, tighten, weak, weaken, science, biology, matter, energy, force, motion, scientist, gravity, observation, experiment, liquid, oxygen, cycle, filtration, evaporation. I will call 5 of the science words for the test, but the children won't know which ones I will call.
We will begin Math Unit 7 which includes: Patterns to products, Number models in parenthesis, and extended facts with multiplication and division. We had to postpone our Math test until tomorrow. The only long period of time that we had today was at the end of the day and I didn't think that was a wise choice of time for the children to take a test. We will take our Geometry test in the morning once we are settled.
We will begin another realistic fiction writing piece and complete one more realistic fiction reading buddy project before we practice our writing to a prompt. This practice will help your child when we go to complete the WraP writing assessment the first week in April.
We are continuing our study of Native Americans and will be reading about the Plains and the Mound Builders. The chart that we are using to organize our information in looking rather impressive. It will be this chart that will help your child organize their own project when the time comes.
If you have travel plans for Spring Break that takes your child out of class prior to the start of Spring Break, please let me know. I may not be able to send your child with all of the work that they will miss, but I will need to send some of the work so that they are not far behind when they return. Thank you!
We have been studying about the Iditarod. Keep an eye out on the television on any news clips for the children to see. I will also send you some sites that you can look at together at home, compliments of Mrs. Baralt. The race began this past Sunday.
