The field trip was a huge success! We did not let the cooler temperatures spoil our fun! We saw and learned so much about the Florida wetlands and its inhabitants. I can't wait to see all the pictures the children took along our adventure. This week we will take our first steps in planning our projects.
This week we will also review the ABC strategy for writing to the prompt. The children will be experiencing the WraP soon and I want the children to feel comfortable with the process. It's a lot of writing over a two day process.
The Dedication of the playground today was sweet and sad at the same time. The children were very respectful while listening to music, poems, and special speakers. All the flowers that the children brought to school for our garden were so beautiful. Thank you to all of you that contributed.
We are now studying the Mound Builders. You will want to ask your child about the snake mounds in Ohio.
We will work on a review math test tomorrow and the test will be on Wednesday. There are several children who need to retake the 7's, 8's and 9's multiplication quizes. Please make sure they review these facts tonight.
Don't forget that the children are working on "baggy books" at home. If your child has not come home with a book to read, they are next in line to receive one. Inside the bag, you will find the book and the directions for the activity. Please return the book and the letter along with the summary all in the same ziploc bag. I will continue to change the level and the genre of the books that come home. I told the children that they had a week to complete the task. The first round of children received their book on Friday. They are allowed to turn in their work any time this week.
Our spelling words this week have the suffix/ending of -ing. Please check the list to the right of the blog.
We will continue our word study in Wordly Wise and will probably have a test on Friday. The words include: diagram, frustrate, frustrating, graduate, prank, primary, risk, risky, stress, urge, vacant, vigorous.
Somehow in the midst of all that we need to accomplish this week, we will try and bring in a little Easter Bunny fun!
The children have a Newspaper Project due on Thursday. If they complete the project ahead of time, they can bring it in and I will keep it until it's time to share with the whole group.

Marvelous Monday after Spring Break!
Today was a great day! I would like to have two more months of days just like today! The children did a very creative job with their book characters. It was a fun way to begin the week. The children each had a turn in front of the room explaining themselves in the first person. I was very proud of everyone in how well they knew their story and understood their character. I even asked questions that they were not anticipating.. excellent job!
This week is our Celebration of Reading week. Tomorrow the children are to bring a big towel to sit on while we reading outside in the courtyard. I told the children that they could bring a book from home or just choose a book in the classroom. On Thursday, we will be entertained by the author, Sherri Wilson. She will talk about her Sunshine State Book, President of the Fifth Grade Class. She will also bring copies of her book that will cost $7.50. If the children purchase her book, she will take the time while she is here to autograph the book. In the afternoon, the children will have be able to participate in a writing workshop with her as well. I will ask the children to bring a picture either one of their own or one from a magazine of a place that they would like to travel to or a place that they have already traveled to . However, it is preferred that no people or animals be in these pictures... just scenery. Our week ends with our Oldie Goldie Book Sale. Our class will go book shopping at 8:15am.
You will find a Newspaper Project in your child's homework folder. I have gone over each activity and given them time to ask questions if need be. What I do need back on Tuesday is the signature slip at the bottom of the letter letting me know that you have seen the project letter. The instructions should be self explanatory, but if you need to ask me any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. The project is due on March 28. I suggested to the children that tonight they begin collecting the paper and perhaps choosing the 4 or more activities they think they would like to complete.
This week in Spelling, our words are homographs. These words are spelled the same but have two different pronunciations. You will find the list of words to the right of the blog. Tonight for homework,the children should write each word in cursive on the sheet provided.
On Friday, the children have a reading comprehension activity due as well. The passage is about Antarctica. This week the goal is to read for specific information and how you take that information and make an outline which is provided for them on the back of the passage. Please don't forget to sign the reading activity as soon as your child has read the passage orally and completed the outline.
We will begin Lesson 11 in Wordly Wise. The words include: diagram, frustrate, frustrating, graduate, prank, primary, risk, risky, stress, urge, vacant, vigorous. You can expect to see this workbook and words come home this week.
We will work very hard to complete the unit in Math and review so that we can take our test by the end of the week. Tonight the children have a Triangle challenge. There are just two questions, but it does require some concentration. You will want to take a look and see if you can count the triangles as well.
We will continue to work on our Realistic Fiction stories. I am going to push the children to complete these as best we can so that next week can begin our study of prompt writing. This will hopefully prepare the children for the WraP testing the week of April 1. I will send home more information next week while we are working on this so that you can understand the work that will be coming home with your child. We have almost completed our Realistic Fiction read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie. The strategies used in this story should help your child in writing their own Realistic Fiction.
This week in Social Studies, we will complete our study of the Plains and the Mound Builders. The children continue to be fascinated about how each Native American group lives and how there are traces of past customs in our own society today.
We will be adding sails and other devices that represent stored energy to our cars this week. The children will be making observations and keeping charts and notes to compare how each device works and either helps or hinders the distance and speed of their car.
We are continuing to collect spare change for Relay for Life. The children have contributed so nicely already and we have been able to add many chain links. Our class goal is to try and double the chain that we have now hanging around our classroom door. You will want to ask your child about it!
