Sorry for the delay of our weekly blog! Our days are full and we are learning lots!
This week I am having the children complete a Verb project. The project is a combination of teacher-directed activities and student choice. I asked the children to cut out at least 5 pictures and glue on the front of their paper briefcase showing action. This is not considered one of the three activities they are supposed to complete. The children were a little confused by this, so I wanted to clarify this with you so that you would be able to direct them successfully at home. Inside their paper briefcase, they have a green sheet that lists the possible activities. I did explain to the children that they can use their skills and knowledge of computer generated programs to facilitate their work. Many children asked if they could substitute a Wordle for the word search and I happily agreed. This project is due on Friday and does not need to be turned in before then.
In Social Studies, we have crossed the Bering Strait, and are settling in with the Inuit in what we now know as Alaska. We will learn about their survival and resourcefulness in battling the freezing temperatures. We will begin recording information on a chart that compares and contrasts the various Native American groups that will eventually help the children make choices in developing a culminating activity.
We are moving along in Math. Our new unit of study will include elements of Geometry such as line segments, rays, lines, angle, solid shapes, and symmetric shapes. Please continue reviewing multiplication and division facts as well.
We successfully completed our first realistic fiction book read with our reading buddies. The children made their own decisions on how much to read prior to the reading meetings. They discussed the major events in the story and learned how to write thin and thick questions. We completed several lessons on character traits so that they could become a more critical reader in understanding character relationships and how that influence a story plot. This also gave the children an opportunity to learn how to work with a reading buddy and that both partners need to work together in order to not only understand the literature but to also get the assignments completed. We will continue this style of reading with our next realistic fiction book, Stone Fox. I am hoping that none of the children have already read this book. This is an excellent book to teach climax. If you think or know that your child has read this book, please encourage them to not discuss this book with others except for what we read together day by day. This is definitely one of those stories that knowing the ending takes away from the rest of the book. We are continuing to focus on choosing "just right' books. This week, the children have a special book where they are asked to critique the books that they read. At the end of the week, it is my hope that we will have time for each child to present a book that they rated as a 4 or 5 (being the best) and "sell" that book to the rest of the class. You may want to ask your child about this special book log and if they have any books listed on this log yet that are rated as a 4 or 5.

Merry Monday!
Yes, today was a merry day! It was packed with responsibilities!!
I did send home a notice for parents to read from the Tampa History Museum. There are several exhibits over the next few months that may peak everyone's interest. The children seemed to be really excited about the Spy School exhibit and program. If you have always wanted to learn a little about the history of Tampa and Ybor City, then the The Great Caper in March is just for you! Enjoy!
Please don't forget to send in the Relay for Life sign up for the hot dog lunch cookout on February 15. I need these forms in by January 29th or you and/or your child will have to make sure they bring their own lunch that day. No services provided by Sage on February 15.

This week we are beginning our Reading Buddy assignments. The goal is for the students to choose their own book and partner based on reading level and interest. However, to make sure that we all understand the goal of what this style of reading learning is about, we will all read the same book and I will assign the partnerships. We will begin using our Reading Workshop notebooks and the children will be held even more accountable for their own reading progress.
We are taking some time in Writer's Workshop to study character traits and how real ideas from real people are developed into realistic fiction stories. Tomorrow the children will read a short realistic fiction piece entitled, When Jo Louis Won the Title which will not only help with character development, but also introduce a writing strategy known as flashback.
We will continue our Google Earth project that we began in computer lab last week. The children are flying from one Native American location to another and finding these areas on a map and indicating where each tribe settled. This week we move back into our Art rotation.
As you know, Friday is Grandparents and Special Friends day. Please make sure the office knows if someone is coming to visit the school and your child. Like the Fall Festival, PLEASE make sure that your child knows "the plan". There is a noon dismissal and if they want to go home with their Special Friend prior to the noon time or at noon, then your child will need to be signed out with that person. I will have a sign out sheet on my classroom front door.
You will want to ask your child what the most interesting part of the book, The Whipping Boy, was to them. Then ask them what the irony was. You may have to remind them what irony means, but their response should that the main characters didn't like each other at the beginning of the book. But by the end of the book, they were friends and actually respected each other even though one was a peasant from the streets and the other a prince.

Happy Tuesday!
I hope that everyone enjoyed the long weekend! The weather certainly cooperated for outdoor fun!
We have quite a bit to accomplish in our short week. We go on our field trip on Friday to the Tampa History Center and will be gone most of the day. However, we will have time in the morning to have our spelling test. We will return to school around 1:30, giving us some time to have some math and social studies time. Please make sure that your child comes to school dressed in their Shorecrest uniform clothes complete with belts if needed. If you would like to accompany us to the History Center, please let me know by the end of the day on Wednesday. We already have a parent riding on the bus with us, but any parent can follow us or meet us there as long as you pay for your own entrance and parking.
Our spelling words this week are as follows: because, cause, forest, forth, forgot, fought, haul, orchard, pause, report, resort, sauce, sport, taught, tornado. Tonight they are to write each word in cursive once on the sheet provided. Tomorrow night for homework , the children will be asked to write a paragraph or story using at least 8 of the words.

This week in social studies, we will make our final journey across the Bering Sea and continue our journey into North America. We will follow our food supply as did the Clovis people using spear tips made from bison bones.
We will conclude our study of decimals. It has taken much practice learning the place value system of decimals. But we have had many more "aha" moments in the last couple of lessons. We will aim at having our unit 5 test next Monday or Tuesday. The next multiplication quiz on the 9's is on Thursday.
As you know we have begun our Realistic Fiction unit for reading and writing. We are spending a bit of time analyzing characters and how the characters of a book do play a huge part in the plot, development, and the mood and tone of a story. You will want to ask your child who the character, Opal, is and why Winn-Dixie is so important to her. This is the class read aloud that we are using to discuss elements of realistic fiction.
The children slipped out too quickly this afternoon and I forgot to give them an important letter from our nurse, Marie Confident. I will send the letter home tomorrow but I wanted to share that a case of conjunctivitis "pinkeye" has been diagnosed in third grade. Please help me remind your child to wash their hands frequently. I also have hand wipes in the class when they can't get to the restroom. The letter has other helpful hints that everyone can do at home. But one thing that I read in this letter that for some reason I had never thought of. Eyeglasses should be washed with soap and water especially if your child has a tendency to take them off and on many time during the day.
Conference day is February 9. As in the past, your time will be the same time slot that you had back in the fall. Please contact me if you need a reminder. If you need to change a time, I will give you the name of the person of that time you would like to switch with, and it will be your responsibility to make the arrangements. However, please don't forget to let me know!

Wow... twirling Tuesday!
Sorry for the delay in communication this week! After school meetings are very important, but do take up some of my writing time. And just when you thought I had nothing more to say! HA!!!
One special event that I would like to share with you is that your child is helping to make someone's day very special. The third grade students are participating in a place mat designing project for the Meals On Wheels program in our area. Each child was asked to create a winter scene on a white place mat. Each place mat will be laminated and will delivered with the food as needed. Our contact person for this project was overjoyed and thrilled that we wanted to do something special to help make a difference. The children have been working on this project in their free time and are excited that they get to do this one more time in the spring. Also, please make sure that your child is taking the Do You Care? game board sheet seriously. They can turn this in anytime during the month of January and into February since I know it will take some time for them to figure out how to accomplish some of the tasks. I did share with the children that if along the way they come up with an idea of another service learning type event, then I would be all ears!
On Friday, January 20, the third grade will take a journey to the Tampa Bay History Center. This history center has done an outstanding job of sharing the history of the Tampa Bay Area. It correlates nicely with what we studied the first part of the year with Native Americans of Florida and the explorers. We will leave school that morning around 9:15 so that we can arrive by 10 to begin our tour. The children will be engaged in the tour for 2 hours. We will have lunch on the grounds there at the History Center and then return to school around 1:30. The children and I will travel on a bus. If you would like to attend as well, you can either meet us at the museum or follow us from school. However, you will have to pay for yourself upon your arrival. Also, it will be the expectation that you would travel with your child and the class in the museum and help with the attention and supervision of the group. Please let me know by the end of this week if you think this is something you would like to do. There is a limit of extra adults that we can take.
We are beginning Lesson 7 in Wordly Wise this week. The words are as follows: act, additional, advice, crumple, fan, memorize, mystify, pause, transparent, and vanish. The story this week that will spotlight these words is entitled, Abracadabra! This story will share some advice on how to perform magic and some ideas that may actually make things disappear. Watch out!
Spelling words this week are as follows: badge, cardinal, cracker, hinge, century, peace, goose, curtain, rage, gravity, certain, glad, great, cotton, large, bragging, cord, giraffe, sincere, and decide. We are working with words that have a hard and soft sounding c and g.
This week in math we are diving into decimals. This traditionally is a harder concept for the children to grasp. We will work on this concept for several days while we are trudging along with out multiplication tables. The multiplication chefs are ready for stickers to be earned. Tomorrow the children will have a practice 8's quiz.
We are beginning our Realistic Fiction unit in Writer's workshop. We are also going to begin our Realistic unit in Reading workshop as well. I will share more about this approach as I see if unfold. But basically the children will have a little more control over what they are reading and how they will explore the reading with a reading buddy. We will have a great deal of conversations about what makes a good reading buddy and how to plan while reading. Each child will receive a Reading binder much like the one they have in writing. Each child will be more responsible and more accountable for their own reading.We have had a couple of mini lessons on recognizing the genre of a book or story and realizing that sometimes we have to branch out and explore other genres for various reasons. Today they went to the library and began the process of checking out a biography. I asked the children to at least read the first chapter of the first 10 pages of find out if the book they chose was really a person of interest. We will begin to chat in class about the writing part of this project, but for now, I just want the children to read and enjoy the book.
I will be discussing and sending home an essay contest idea. We have been and continue to be concerned about sun safety when the children are outside, not just at school but any time they go outside. I am going to review the main idea and explain the contest to them. I will them send home the contest essay form. I would encourage any child to participate. If your child shows a desire to do this, I will help them in class during a writing conference time. However, it may take some work at home too and then we can make the finishing touches here at school. So be on the lookout for the Writing Essay Contest, What do you Know About Sun Safety?
The reading comprehension work, Arctic Disaster, is due on Friday. Please make sure that you and your child signs the paper
The children have a science experiment activity in their homework folder on how to make a whirlwind. They have until next Monday to complete and turn in their observations.
The children are working on a great project in computer lab. Please make sure you ask them to explain about Scratch.. and no it's not an itch.
Thank you again for your continued support and help at home. Please make sure your child is reading at least 15 to 20 minutes every night and practicing multiplication tables at least 15 minutes every night as well. I am backing off of the writing homework this week to give them more time to do the drill that they need to be successful.
Also, in thinking ahead, January 27 is Grandparent's and Special Friend's Day. Please make sure that all the proper forms have been filled out and sent to the office letting them know if your child will have a special visitor. No worried is they don't as I will pair them up with another classmate to help with the tour at school and sharing work. Please make sure that your child has a plan for that day and please let the visitor know that they will be responsible for signing your child out in the classroom with me that day before they can leave at noon.

Happy New Year!
I hope that everyone had a fun and restful holiday and winter break! I do hope all your New Year's wishes come true! We are underway and hopefully refreshed to learn more and work hard. I think our snowflakes hanging in our room helped to bring in the cooler temperatures. YEA!!
Thank you to all of you who came to our Writer's Celebration prior to the vacation. The children loved being able to share their writing pieces. I will be adding these labors of love to each child's electronic portfolio. At the end of the year, some of their writing pieces will come home while others will stay in their writing folders to share with their next teacher.
I know this week is a short week, but we are trying to stick to our schedule as best we can. There will be a spelling test on Friday. The children also have their Reading Comprehension Activity due on Friday as well. The children will learn about idioms by reading about how the Star-Spangled Banner was created.
Our Spelling words this week are called "Must Know" Words. These are words that the children are frequently misspelling in their writing. On Friday's test, they will have to write 4 sentences using these words. So while they are reviewing the spelling of the word, they can begin thinking about a descriptive sentence as well so that they are better prepared on Friday.
PLEASE help the children come to school this week with at least 3 newly sharpened pencils and at least one new red sharpened marking pencil.
We will continue our reading work in our class novel, The Whipping Boy. You will begin to see some activities coming home for homework that relates to the story.
We are continuing in our history book. We are going to pick up our timeline at the Ice Age after discussing in class about the importance of history in chapter one prior to the holiday.
We are continuing our work on place value in math. We will review numbers and their place values by learning about the US Census. Please continue to practice the multiplication tables. Tomorrow the children have a quiz on the 6's. From this point forward, many of these quizzes count as a grade and the children can earn their stickers.
I will be conducting some formal reading assessments over the next two weeks. This will help me gauge what the progress is in reading and perhaps what lessons I need to reteach or develop to further improvement.

We will continue our reading work in our class novel, The Whipping Boy. You will begin to see some activities coming home for homework that relates to the story.
We are continuing in our history book. We are going to pick up our timeline at the Ice Age after discussing in class about the importance of history in chapter one prior to the holiday.
We are continuing our work on place value in math. We will review numbers and their place values by learning about the US Census. Please continue to practice the multiplication tables. Tomorrow the children have a quiz on the 6's. From this point forward, many of these quizzes count as a grade and the children can earn their stickers.
I will be conducting some formal reading assessments over the next two weeks. This will help me gauge what the progress is in reading and perhaps what lessons I need to reteach or develop to further improvement.
