We had a great time at Sawgrass park today. We learned a great deal about the animals and their habitats. We learned the difference between weathered rock, weathering, erosion, and deposition. We learned interesting facts from the color markings on a 3 year old alligator to the edible parts of Spanish Moss that is neither Spanish nor a moss. You will want to ask your child to share a few facts that they learned today. We will continue our project work as we collect more facts and download the pictures that our student photographers took along the trail.
In Writer's Workshop, we will begin our practice writing to a prompt in preparation for the WraP portion of the ERB's. This assessment will take place on April 3rd and 4th.
I am encouraging my children to continue reading this year's Sunshine State books. Children who read at least 3 of these books, will qualify to vote in April for their favorite book. The voting days will be April 19, 20, 24, 25 here at school in the library.
The Spelling words this week are as follows: although, awkward, complain, constant, daughter, destroy, district, employ, farther, improperly, kindliness, knuckle, mischief, laughter, simply. Tonight for homework the children need to write each word once in cursive on the sheet that I gave them today.
Also tonight for homework, the children should review the homophone sheet that we worked on last week. Those homophones are very confusing and some of the ones that are misused the most often.

History Challenge

Spring Has Sprung!
We had a great day today! First we presented at our Town Meeting. The children recited the Preamble of the Constitution and two of our classmates shared a piece of writing that we completed in class on what Freedom means to us. One of our moms did video parts of the the presentation and as soon as I have a copy, I will make it available to everyone via either the blog or my email.
We had a very productive day and I am looking forward to a VERY productive week.
The spelling words this week have double suffixes and can be tricky to spell. I advised the children to study just the base word tonight. The the second night they should add the first suffix and the third night add the second suffix. The words are listed on the side of the blog, but the children have a sheet with the words and the base words in their homework folder.
We began our new class novel today, Sarah, Plain, and Tall. We have read the first two chapters and discussed the setting the of the book. Tonight, they are to write an advertisement as if they are Jacob Witting looking for a mother for his children. The advertisement should include a main idea in the beginning and then include specific details from the chapters that were read today. They were not allowed to bring home the book. As we have done in the past, the children will keep a folder of activities as we read further into the book. With each chapter brings a new activity that builds on comprehension and creativity.
On Friday, the children have a final George Washington's Socks response due. I suggested that the children work on the questions on a loose leaf sheet of paper to make sure the responses are written in detail before it's copied onto the actual sheet. They are allowed to use the book which many may have come home with tonight. Please help me by making sure that book gets returned as soon as they are finished. The assignment is due by Friday.
We read and learned a great deal today about the Plains Indians and the Mound Builders. You will want to ask what the differences they learned today about each of these tribes. Tomorrow we head even further east to learn about the Eastern Woodland Indians or as they are sometimes referred to as Indians of the Eastern Forests.
We are moving into Unit 7 in Math. Prior to spring break we worked on square products. This week we will continue with multiplication and division work and getting into number models with parentheses. The children are coming home with a problem solving-logical reasoning activity. They can use the back or another sheet of paper to help solve the problems. I told them that they could ask for parental assistance, but please don't tell them the answer. However, there may be a couple that you have to help organize the information before they can solve the question/problem.
Please make sure that I have received the lunch form for our field trip to Sawgrass next Monday. I will be sharing more details about our adventure later on this week. So make sure you are checking emails regularly.

Spring Break Countdown!
Thank you all for coming on Friday. The kids did an amazing job and I was very proud of all their hard work. Due to days out of school and a few scheduling conflicts, the children did not get as much practice as previous years. Just goes to show the talent we have in third grade. Thank you for your help with costumes and those moms and dads that worked on the set and the reception after the show. Every year I am in awe at what the kids decide to do for their state cake.
We have much to catch up on from last week and accomplish new this week. The children will have homework tonight and tomorrow night that will take some focus and perhaps some extra time. Tonight the children will have some George Washington's Socks questions(due Wednesday), spelling abc order and a writing assessment activity. We will have a spelling test on Friday along with the reading comprehension activity, Star Trek. Again, please make sure that you sign once you have heard your child read the story.
Friday is Field Day. The children are coming home with a letter that explains the details of the morning. Third grade goes to the field at 10:00-11:30. We will hopefully be able to get some quality work accomplished in the morning.
Spelling words not only celebrate our reading, but also the Science Explorations we will be doing this week. Today, we had many parents come in and share three incredible aspects of science. You will want to ask your child what they learned and made. The children rotated from Making Paper to How to Save the Coral Reefs to How to Purify Water. I was very impressed with the organization of the event and the children learned so much and enjoyed the hands-on aspect. Our class has science visitors tomorrow and again on Wednesday.
Our Spelling words this week are as follows: black, blacken, bright, brighten, chose, chosen, damp, dampen, dark, darken, fast, fasten, hard, harden length, lengthen, moist, moisten, soft, soften, spoke, spoken, straight, straighten, thick, thicken, tight, tighten, weak, weaken, science, biology, matter, energy, force, motion, scientist, gravity, observation, experiment, liquid, oxygen, cycle, filtration, evaporation. I will call 5 of the science words for the test, but the children won't know which ones I will call.

The only long period of time that we had today was at the end of the day and I didn't think that was a wise choice of time for the children to take a test. We will take our Geometry test in the morning once we are settled.
We will begin another realistic fiction writing piece and complete one more realistic fiction reading buddy project before we practice our writing to a prompt. This practice will help your child when we go to complete the WraP writing assessment the first week in April.
We are continuing our study of Native Americans and will be reading about the Plains and the Mound Builders. The chart that we are using to organize our information in looking rather impressive. It will be this chart that will help your child organize their own project when the time comes.
If you have travel plans for Spring Break that takes your child out of class prior to the start of Spring Break, please let me know. I may not be able to send your child with all of the work that they will miss, but I will need to send some of the work so that they are not far behind when they return. Thank you!
We have been studying about the Iditarod. Keep an eye out on the television on any news clips for the children to see. I will also send you some sites that you can look at together at home, compliments of Mrs. Baralt. The race began this past Sunday.
