Many of the children were a little tired today after all the Super Bowl excitement. It was unanimous. The bulldog dancing across the finish line was a huge success!
I look forward to seeing everyone on Conference Day to discuss the progress of your child. Since we have a short period of time, it is sometimes helpful if you come with questions already prepared. It helps move our conversation along and cover all that we need to cover.
We began our study of Geometry last Thursday. We are concentrating on lines, line segments, and rays. You will find a couple of activity sheets that we did today in their homework folder. I asked the children to practice following those directions again on loose leaf paper so that they will hopefully become more comfortable it those three elements before we move on. Their homework assignment tonight is for them to find 4 things inside or outside the home that represents right angles. I told them that they could either draw the pictures or use magazine pictures to represent their example.
In Social Studies, we hung out with the Inuit for a couple of days and now we are moving on to the Cliff Dwellers. You may want to ask how these people lived and what they ate since their houses where really inside cliffs.
The children will be coming home soon with a part to learn in the third grade program and a letter about the cake that they will be making for the after show celebration. I will explain all of it to the children, but if you have any questions once the letter comes home, please don't hesitate to contact me. We are hopeful that the letter will come home but the end of the week.
Our Realistic Fiction read aloud is Because of Winn-Dixie. You will want to ask your child about the main character, Opal, and her special Littmus Lozenge.The children are really enjoying this book. The children are also reading another example of realistic fiction entitled, Stone Fox. Please take the time to ask your child about the main characters thus far and the various events that have happened. The main character Willy shows a great deal of courage and responsibility. And Searchlight, his dog, is amazing!
We do have a spelling list this week. The words have the consonant sound j but spelled with a g. I have asked the children to turn in at least one Spelling City activity by Friday. The words are as follows: badge, baggage, bridge, cabbage, cottage, dodge, gentle, gigantic, gymnast, hedge, judge, package, range, ridge, village.
We will celebrate Valentine's Day in the room. The children will get a small edible treat and will be able to exchange Valentines. No child is to be excluded from the Valentine list. I am going to discuss with the class tomorrow about their special delivery boxes. I would encourage you not to feel like the Valentine has to come with a piece of candy.But if one feels feel the urge, please make sure it's small and wrapped.
We have begun our collection of books for Oldie Goldie. For our new friends, this is a very special event. The children are asked to clean out their bookshelves and bring a few books that they don't need any longer to donate. The box is in our third grade hallway. Then on February 24, the children will be able to go shopping for some new books that have been donated by someone else. Usually these books cost any where from a dime or quarter at the most. It is a really nice event and the children love to shop for books as does their teacher. I have been able to boost my classroom library thanks to the marvelous donations made by many. On that day , I am going to give the children extra independent reading so that they can enjoy the books that they purchase.
