I wanted to blog on this festive day! My little cupids will be arriving all covered in red and pink and eager for the days events. It is so sweet that children still love to give and receive Valentine's cards. They have been a buzz about which kind of cards they are going to have this year. The children will get to make their special deliveries this afternoon and enjoy and special sweet treat! I hope everyone has a great Valentine's Day.
In Social Studies we will be continuing our journey to the Northwest Coast of the United States to study the Native Americans called, "the show offs". You will want to ask your child just why and how this group earned that name.
This week is a short week for the children. We will have our spelling test and they have a reading comprehension activity due on Thursday. Again, please make sure that you sign the reading assignment after they have read it to you aloud.
Our spelling words this week reflect irregular plurals. The words are as follows: calf, calves, knife, knives, half, halves, wife, wives, kilo, kilos potato, potatoes, video, videos, tomato, tomatoes.
In Math, we are studying geometry complete with angles and vertices. We will also practice measuring angles. We will not be able to complete this unit before report cards come home. However, I will be giving the children a mid-year assessment that will incorporate many of the skills that have been taught since the beginning of the year. Please continue to have your child review multiplication and division tables at home every night.
We will spend a little more time on realistic fiction both in writing and in reading. We have almost completed our class read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie. We have completed our class novel Stone Fox. And though it had a sad ending, it has a very powerful message. The children have been working on a journal entry that conveys their thoughts and feelings. If you would like your child to bring this journal notebook home to share with you, they are allowed to do so.
We will move on to a new class novel, George Washington's Socks. Though this is not a realistic fiction, it is an historical fiction. I know the children are going to love this book as well. A group of children are camping in their backyard and suddenly find themselves going back in history to the Revolutionary War.
Don't forget that tomorrow is our Relay For Life picnic. Many of the children have ordered a hot dog lunch. Our lunch will be at our regular time. They are also allowed to wear purple shirts but with uniform bottoms.

Please take the time to check out our Scratch projects. Scratch is an activity that introduces the students to computer programming. The children loved this project and I know will be eager to share how it was created.
